Early Lung Cancer Screening
Initially, the work of Dr. Geno Saccomanno focused on lung cancer in uranium miners. The Institute continues to investigate methods of early detection, causes, and development of lung cancer. Under the direction of Joel Bechtel, MD, high-risk individuals identified in a primary care setting are screened for early signs of lung cancer by using a combination of sputum cytology, CT scan, and chest x-ray. This project is currently in the third year of a five-year follow-up phase in which participants are monitored through ongoing screening and medical records review.
The Saccomanno Research Institute was honored to present their early lung cancer screening research at the World Lung Cancer Conference sponsored by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, July 3 - 6, 2005 in Barcelona, Spain.
