St. Mary’s Hospital has received LEED Silver certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for its recently completed Century Project expansion.

Using the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) system, USGBC engineering consultants evaluated the hospital’s project and assigned points based on how design, construction practices, and daily operation impact the environment, explains Cherie Gorby, St. Mary’s executive vice president and chief operating officer.

“We have earned this prestigious recognition for putting what we believe into action,” Gorby says. “Stewardship is a value that guides our daily activities. We know we hold all the earth’s resources in trust.”

St. Mary’s earned points toward certification for integrating the new construction into existing infrastructure; making accommodations for public transportation and alternative fuel vehicles; limiting pollution during construction; incorporating efficient water use in the landscape design; installing efficiently operating mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems; purchasing electricity for daily operation from green power sources; using building supplies made from recycled materials; recycling more than 70 percent of construction waste; and operating an organization-wide recycling program.

St. Mary’s is one of fewer than 50 hospitals nationwide to receive LEED certification for “green” construction methods and materials and daily operations.
