St. Mary’s volunteers find outlets for talents and interests
When a visitor walks in St. Mary’s front door, volunteers greet them at the information desk. And, who delivers all those flowers to patients? Again, volunteers. Companionship and meals for homebound seniors? Homework help for at-risk children? You get the picture.
St. Mary’s always welcomes new volunteers. “We like to take everyone’s special talents and interests into account and find the best place for each volunteer,” says Jeanie Morris, manager of Volunteer Services. That place may be on the piano bench in the hospital’s lobby. St. Mary’s Music Ministry of employees and community volunteers donate their time and talents to provide entertainment and a pleasant distraction for patients and visitors. Some members of the musical team play our baby grand piano in the main lobby. “We welcome more musicians to audition to be part of this healing team,” Morris says.
Some volunteers prefer clerical work, some want to work on special events or one-time projects. Others assist families waiting for a loved one having surgery. “Our volunteers will tell you they love their work,” Morris says, “because they give, but they also receive.”
St. Mary’s Hospital and senior program volunteers provided nearly $2.7 million in services to patients, families, staff, and area residents in 2010.
