St. Mary’s has received the American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guildelines®–Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes St. Mary’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of stroke care by ensuring stroke patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations.

“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost,” says Kelly Arnold, RN, quality review coordinator for stroke care. Early recognition of stroke symptoms and calling 911 immediately are essential to minimizing the disabling effects of stroke. There are treatments for stroke, but time is of the essence. St. Mary’s is always equipped to provide brain imaging scans and clot-busting medications when appropriate.

Treatment guidelines also include patient education, Arnold explains. “Studies demonstrate that patients who are taught how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital reduce their risk of a second stroke,” she says. “The goal of participating in Get With The Guidelines is to save lives,” Arnold adds.

Call 911 if you or someone you know suddenly experiences these symptoms:
• Numbness/weakness of arm, face, or leg on one side
• Confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
• Trouble seeing in one or both eyes
• Difficulty walking, dizziness, loss of coordination
• Severe headache with no known cause
