Title
Women in red: Learn about and prevent heart disease
Date
01/24/2012
Article

Heart disease is suffering from an identity crisis. Too many people think it’s only a men’s health problem. Not true! And because the warning signs of heart disease can be different for women than for men, they often go unrecognized and untreated. Heart disease is the number one cause of death for women. Nearly as many women as men suffer heart attacks in the U.S. “Those facts surprise people,” says Cathy Roberts, RN, director of Cardiac Services at St. Mary’s. “When women realize they can develop heart disease just like their fathers, husbands, and sons can, prevention and education become priorities,” she says. Reducing the risk factors of heart disease are the same for men and women—eat healthy, exercise, don’t smoke, and manage stress.

“Knowing the risks and symptoms can save your life,” Roberts says. That’s the idea behind the American Heart Association’s awareness campaign and St. Mary’s annual Go Red for Women luncheon. The red dress has become the symbol of women’s heart disease awareness, she explains. “You’ll see hundreds of women in red at our luncheon. We have fun, we learn, and we learn to take charge of our health. We hope you can join us this year.”
