Cancer Prevention Study-3

When we hear someone we know has cancer, we usually ask ourselves “What can I do to help?” But we often feel powerless. Now there’s something most of us can do, something that could save thousands, maybe millions, of people from receiving a cancer diagnosis.

“The American Cancer Society is sponsoring a large-scale research study called Cancer Prevention Study-3, or CPS-3, and the people of western Colorado can be a part of it because St. Mary’s Regional Cancer Center is a partner in the study,” says Marty Jacobson, PhD, director of St. Mary’s Saccomanno Research Institute. “The goal of CPS-3 is to better understand the factors, like lifestyle, environment, and genetics, that cause or prevent cancer and, ultimately, to help eliminate cancer as a major health concern for future generations.”

The study will follow at least 300,000 Americans over the next 20 to 30 years. “How often do we get the opportunity to help solve a serious health problem?” Jacobson asks.
“I encourage everyone who meets the guidelines to participate! It’s a small effort for a huge cause!”
