Genetic Susceptibility to Lung Cancer

In collaboration with a consortium of laboratories from around the country, the Institute continues to study genetic susceptibility to lung cancer. The Institute identifies and contacts area families with a high presence of lung cancer. Living members of families who wish to participate provide blood samples. The DNA from the blood, along with existing tissue and sputum samples from deceased family members are examined at a central laboratory. The genetic information from area families, when combined with that of families identified by other consortium members, presents a unique opportunity to identify marker genes for lung cancer susceptibility and to understand the interaction between this susceptibility and environmental exposures such as tobacco smoke and radon.

The study was published in the American Journal of Human Genetics' September 2004 edition (link below).

A press release was also issued by the National Cancer Institute, which highlights the findings of this study.
