Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program (RESEP)

The Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program at St. Mary's Saccomanno Research Institute was created by the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) Amendments of 2000. This program was made available to pre-1971 uranium industry workers, as well as downwinders and onsite participants of nuclear weapons tests. Included in the program's onsite services to the participants were: 1) Comprehensive medical and occupational history; 2) comprehensive physical examination); 3 screening spirometry; 4) standard chest x-rays; 50 standard 12-lead electrocardiogram; 6) urine analysis, basic metabolic profile, and CBC; 7) test for occult fecal blood; 8) resting arterial blood gas test (for those who qualified); and 9) sputum cytology and non-contrast, spiral CT of the chest (for those who qualified). Also, counseling was offered for those who qualified for compensation through the RECA. From March 2003 through December 2009, the program screened approximately 950 individuals in addition to an average of at least one follow-up visit. Counseling availability enabled numerous uranium industry workers to apply for and receive their compensation award.
